DSM has been working as a sub-contractor to the Urban Institute in Tajikistan since 2003 on various projects funded under the United States Agency For International Development, Central Asian Republics, Local Government Initiative. Projects include: assisting local communal services organizations with solid waste collection initiatives; collection and composting of yard and street wastes; closure of open dumps and siting, design, financing and operation of new landfills; full cost accounting and fee setting for water and solid waste services; pilot water metering and water conservation projects; and construction and on-going financing of public toilets.
