Analysis of Commercial and Institutional Waste Generation Composition and Recycling

DSM Environmental Services, working with R.W. Beck and Associates and Stanley Engineers, had primary responsibility for development of a comprehensive survey of commercial and institutional waste generators in the Ottawa region of Ontario. Commercial and institutional waste generators were divided into major categories, including restaurants, government offices, schools, small and large retail establishments, supermarkets, and private office buildings. On-site waste generator surveys were then conducted at a representative sample of each generator category. The surveys were used to determine waste generation, waste reduction and recycling activities and to estimate total waste generation and recycling, by material type, for each sector of the economy. The resulting estimates were used to develop priorities for future waste reduction and recycling strategies.
