Hospital Waste Preliminary Survey
Borsod County, Miskolc, Hungary

Working as a sub-contractor to RTI, under a U.S. AID project, DSM conducted on-site evaluations of hospitals in Borsod County, Hungary (comprising 7,000 beds) for the purpose of future planning for disposal of medical wastes generated at the 15 hospitals. The waste disposal practices at each hospital were reviewed. Particular attention was placed on the infectious medical wastes and how they were handled and disposed by each of the hospitals.

Analysis of Waste Generation, Preparation of Waste Management Plan
Gyor Communal Services, Gyor, Hungary

DSM worked with the City of Gyor to develop waste generation and composition data for use in a comprehensive master plan. On-site sorting of waste was conducted by DSM during different periods of the year, and DSM trained local firms in sorting techniques. DSM compiled the information for a Solid Waste Management Plan being prepared by a Danish consulting company as part of an international cooperative effort. The waste composition sorting clearly demonstrated to local officials that incineration of the waste was not an appropriate management option because of the high moisture content from food wastes and the high percentage of ash.
