Recycling Collection Evaluation

The City of Dublin and the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio contracted with DSM in 2003 to undertake a one year analysis of a pilot program designed to test the feasibility of changing from traditional dual stream curbside collection using manual side loading trucks and blue bins to fully automated co-collection of refuse and recyclables using 64-gallon carts and a split truck. The material will be delivered to the Rumpke MRF in Columbus, which was recently retrofitted to accept single stream material.

DSM gathered detailed timing and cost data on the existing system, which were compared against two test systems on two 600 household pilot routes. DSM then completed an economic comparison of the existing system and the two pilot systems to determine if automated single stream collection and processing was more cost effective than conventional dual stream collection and processing.
